MyHeritage DNA – Reveal your Ethnicity and Ancestry
Whilst wandering the globe, I’ve often wondered where my roots and ancestry began.
I have seen others do a MyHeritage DNA test, and, being an avid traveller, I thought it would be super fun to discover my own personal ethnicity and ancestry.
It was about time to give one of these services a go to see where my past truly comes from.
The great news is, the whole process is rather easy to do and can be done from the comfort of your very own home. No need to make a trip to a lab, you can do everything over the internet and by post.
The process is rather simple to follow
Simply go to the MyHeritage DNA web shop to purchase your kit and it will arrive to your home in the post a few weeks after you’ve made the order.
This is the first step towards getting your DNA results.
After you’ve set up your own online account with MyHeritage DNA they will give you a set of instructions within the kit box to follow.
The box that arrives in the post contains everything you need to gather your DNA results.
Simply follow the steps set out on the instruction card within the package.
You can follow the steps using the online instructions or even watch the helpful YouTube video if you get lost.
Once you’ve popped your swab kit in the post, all you need to do is wait for the results to come back from the lab.
It can take a while because first your package needs to arrive to the lab, then you need to wait for the lab to test your kit and then you can finally find out your results.
My results took one month to arrive after posting my swab test.
Results will arrive in your email inbox
Once you’ve sent off your swab kit you will get two emails sent to your inbox.
The first email notifies you that your kit has arrived at the labs and testing has started. You also get access to an online tracking portal to see how the test is coming along.
You will also get a second email informing you when the results are ready. You will then get a link that will take you to a results page which has an interactive map showing where your DNA is from.
Here are my personal results:
MyHeritage DNA results (drum roll!)
Now for the fun part, discovering your own DNA ethnicity and ancestry.
I wouldn’t open the email asap – first make sure you have a cup of coffee ready for the results as they appear on an interactive map that will take you around to all the locations that were discovered in your DNA.
It’s rather fun and interactive and a great way to find out the results. Far better than a simple results letter in the post. Plus the online version gets to your inbox a lot quicker.
My results found in my DNA:
– 55.1%: North and West European
– 17.1%: English
– 16.4%: Irish, Scottish, and Welsh
– 6.8%: Iberian
– 4.6%: Scandinavian
(Pretty interesting results, turns out I’m not as English as I first thought.)
Isn’t this just super fun! I have to say I was most surprised to see a small 4.6% Scandinavian in my DNA line.
I love Scandinavia so much and enjoy travelling around this part of the world. It’s nice to see that I have a bit of a Viking connection and past with me which is rather funny and entertaining.
I knew that I would have some English with me and 17.1% did come as a shock, but the 16.4% Irish, Scottish, and Welsh do make up for that amount as I knew that I had some Irish roots somewhere down my family tree. (Don’t we all have a bit of Irish in us come St Patricks day?)
I’m happy with my results and found them entertaining to discover.
