My Video and Photography Packing List
Welcome to Travel Dave’s Video Photography Packing List.
When it comes to Video Photography its important I capture stunning visual Photographs and Video’s to help share my travel moments with my audience here on Travel Dave.
I thought I would share with you all my personal packing kit list and what I personally use when it comes to Video and Photography equipment.
Make your video, photography, packing list as Simple as possible
Limitations Don’t have to affect the quality of your footage.
My core piece of Photographic equipment which I also use for capturing all my HD video footage as well is an iPhone 6 Plus.
“Did you just say a smart phone?? What???”
Yes, yes I did and in fact I’ve been using smartphones to capture my video, photography on Travel Dave back since 2010 starting out with a Sony Ericsson K790 Cybershot.
Just goes to show the power that you behold within your pocket.
The iPhone 6 Plus is a powerful video, photography SmartPhone and I’m Happy to have this item in my Video Photography packing list. It’s perfect for travellers and Digital nomads wanting to pack light and cut out expensive, bulky DSLR’s.
I’m a big fan of the community surrounding iPhone Photography on Platforms such as Flickr, and Instagram by searching Hashtag: #iphoneography
I’m not having a pop at professional travel photographers who use DLSR’s, in fact, I wouldn’t state I’m a professional Photographer.
It’s simply a fun hobby of mine and I enjoy capturing the world in the best way I can share with the my audience here on Travel Dave.
Next drum Roll….. I edit my photos on Apple iPhoto!
I like to keep things as simple as possible to show that what I do on a daily basis is achievable for anyone with a Smart phone and laptop they already might own.
I find joy and entertainment in testing the waters on limitations and find it to be an enjoyable challenge.
That is my Camera Kit list: iPhone 6 Plus (The Plus has better image stabilization for video compared to standard model). And soon I will be upgrading to an iPhone 6S Plus, just waiting to get home to the UK to Pick one up. Time for 4K Travel Video!
Here is Travel Dave’s Video Photography Travel equipment Packing kit and List of Smartphone App’s
Now you know The secret of Travel Dave, that all my Video’s and Photography is captured on a smart phone! Next I will go through my most useful smartphone photography apps and Equipment that I use for Travel Hacking my Capturing process.
iPhone Photography App’s Travel Dave use’s
(Here is an example of what 20 seconds of playing around on an editing app called Enlight can do.)
One of the advantages of using an iPhone 6 plus for your photography, is the endless amount of photography apps you can find in the Apple App store.
Have a Photography issue that needs dealing with such as Shutter Speed issues? You can find an app to fix this problem: “Slow Shutter Cam”.
This is a major point you should use to your photography advantage, Use apps to take, edit and improve your travel photo’s.
The Two take away apps that I most frequently use on my iPhone 6 Plus?
Pro HDR X
(When you can’t quite capture that lighting at the moment, that’s when PRO HDR X kicks in)
PRO HDR X, helps towards capturing the image as you see it. Maybe you are watching a sunset and kicking yourself that the lighting you see is not being captured in its best essence.
PRO HDR X solves this by capturing multiple layers of different lighting and stacks them on top of each other to help the colour in your shot pop out.
This app is hit and miss, sometimes it doesn’t work so well, you don’t need to capture all photos in PRO HDR X, but when the lighting is best, this app really kicks in to blow up your photo.
Enlight
(Can pop out the image and give it some ground with some small post editing time on Enlight)
Editing your photos can really make a picture come to life. Did you know that lighter pictures are more effective when engaging an audience on Instagram?
It helps to do some editing and Enlight works wonders on the iPhone 6 Plus.
Tap away, play around with the settings, the app has many built in tutorials to guide you around this powerful app.
Spending half a minute on Enlight can make a huge difference to your photography and help your images come to life online.
Travel Video Photography equipment I have in my packing list
You’ve got your iPhone 6 Plus, Loaded all your Photography App’s and ready to take your Travel Video and Photography to the next step.
Here I have some further minimal equipment suggestions for you that I personally travel with on the road to capture better travel footage.
Sound Quality is vital when capturing Travel Video footage on your iPhone 6 plus
You would be pretty pissed off if you went to the cinema and the movie had terrible sound but incredible visuals.
This is the common case when recording Footage on your iPhone 6 Plus, the footage can be incredible, but the sound quality can take some damage, especially if you are in the busy loud environment.
Here is my quick, affordable solution:
Rode Smartlav+
Rode Smartlav+ is affordable, perfectly compact for travel (includes a travel pouch) and is a much welcomed, improvement to Rode’s previous model(New model has a + in it).
Simply plug it in, clip it onto your T-Shirt and it automatically starts working once you Click record on your iPhone 6 Plus.
It works by capturing direct, focused sound recordings and focuses on picking up you, rather than background noise.
Notice instant improvements to your sound recording quality.
Works well for Periscope too!
Stabilization is important towards capturing a steady shot.
(A HD video I shot to play around with the Joby Gorillapod GripTight XL stabilization)
Stability is important towards retaining quality in your Travel Video’s and Photography.
For Photos, it helps to capture your photo’s better as you can spend some time lining up your shots and focus on capturing the photo in its true beauty.
In terms of Travel Video’s, stability helps towards delivering better pan shots that makes your footage more enjoyable to watch, no one wants to see a jumpy video!
Joby Gorillapod GripTight XL
The Joby Gorillapod GripTight XL, is the perfect tripod for travellers and Smart phones combined.
Compact, light, snaps onto your Smart Phone and makes a stable environment to create those ultimate pans for travel Videos.
Its well built and sturdy which is why I’m happy to invest in the Joby Gorillapod GripTight XL compared to a cheaper model as you want the reliability that your expensive iPhone 6 Plus doesn’t slip out and smashed onto the ground.
It’s rugged and ready for the elements, which makes it a perfect travel companion.
You will often see me wrapping this around the tree’s to capture that ultimate travel shot.
Remember to have fun with your Video, Photography, introducing the Olloclip
(Playing around with an Olloclip 4-in-1 around Brussels, Belguim, it’s a lot of fun!)
Want to end my last suggestion by adding a fun element to this Video Photography packing list.
I love playing around with the Olloclip Lens attachment That works well on the iPhone 6 Plus.
One side of attachment holds the Fisheye and Macro 15x while the other side has the Wide-angle and Macro 10x lenses.
What I love about the Olloclip the most is that It’s small and compact to fit in your pocket and tuck away safely in your backpack (Think how difficult that can be for DSLR lenses!).
Olloclip 4-in-1 Lens kit, perfect for your travel video photography packing list
The Olloclip attaches to a compact plastic key ring attachment to easily store and keep the Olloclip at hand.
Makes the Olloclip Perfect for Digital Nomads, backpackers and travellers in general who want to play around and have a lot of fun with Micro Photography.
Final note on travel Video Photography
Remember to have a lot of fun with capturing your travel shots: Enjoy, embrace, play around and most importantly experiment and try out new and exciting ways to capture your travels.
After all it can be a fun element of enjoyment to add to your future travel trips, share with your friends and family and create fantastic memories to look back at when your grey and old.
Put these above practices in place and already you are on the road to creating and capturing better Travel Video’s and Photography.
Have fun capturing the world!
