What to do in the city of Kathmandu, Nepal

  • by Dave Brett
Kathmandu

On a recent trip to Nepal, I got to check out the city of Kathmandu for a week and had a really incredible time.

This blog post is all about my favourite things that I got up to in the city to help you out if you ever make it to Nepal.

Nepal is a wonderful country to visit, and Kathmandu is the gateway city to the Himalayas.

There are also so many other adventure activities that can be done in and around the city.

There’s a good chance that if you happen to be visiting Nepal, your hiking journey will start in Kathmandu.

If you would like to do some hiking close by to Kathmandu, I can highly recommend checking out the Poon Hill Trek.

Be sure to spend some time here before you head off around the rest of the country, as this city has so much to offer.

Organised chaos is a good way of explaining this city – Kathmandu seems to somehow just magically work.

Watching the way people move and live their lives in this city offers a fascinating insight into how things are done in the Nepalese capital.

Hop into a local taxi and explore what you can do in Kathmandu.

Stay and hotel Tibet

During my stay in Kathmandu, I stayed at the Hotel Tibet International which was perfectly located in the quieter side of town.

This meant I could get some much needed rest – the rooms were spacious and the staff extremely helpful. If you would like to get a taste of Tibet in Kathmandu this hotel is a great place to stay.

Enjoy eating momo’s

Kathmandu, Nepal 2018 24

Momos are the national delicacy here in Nepal, and a trip to this country wouldn’t be complete without trying a plate full of momos.

Be careful as they are both tasty and delicious and an affordable treat as well. Normally comes with a dip, and you can get momos in a chicken or veg option.

These dumplings are what you will want to eat to your heart’s desire. Enjoy this local dish that seems to be incredibly popular with anyone visiting Nepal.

Kathmandu Durbar Square

Kathmandu, Nepal 2018 52

Kathmandu Durbar Square in front of the Old Royal Palace of the former Kathmandu Kingdom, and is one of three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Sadly, many of the buildings in this area where destroyed by the earthquake that hit Nepal back in 2015.

Brick by brick they have been rebuilding the most damaged areas, and it’s slowly but surely being put back together to be restored to its former glory.

Still worth walking around as there is a lot to see, and much of the main square has already been restored.

Thamel shopping street

The place to shop, be seen and get a bite to eat. This area is filled to the brim with fake outdoor gear and hanging pray flags, anything you need before you go on a hike can be found in Thamel.

Thamel is a commercial neighbourhood in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal.

Thamel has been the centre of the tourist industry in Kathmandu for over four decades, starting from the hippy days when many artists came to Nepal and spent creative weeks in Thamel.

Enjoy walking around the market stalls at night time and be sure to check out some of the many great restaurants that can be found here.

Garden of dreams

Kathmandu, Nepal 2018 26

The Garden of Dreams (also the Garden of Six Seasons) is a neo-classical garden in Kaiser Mahal Kathmandu, Nepal, built in 1920.

A great place to escape the busy streets of Kathmandu and enjoy the quiet corner of the city all to yourself whilst enjoying the many different types of garden.

Boudhanath Stupa

One of the biggest Stupa to be found in the world and is now a UNESO protected site.

Closely located to the Tibet hotel, just within a short walking distance. It’s easy to spot as the Boudhanath stupa dominate the skyline and can easily be spotted from the sky.

Take a scenic flight over the Himalayas to Everest

Everest Express, Nepal 2018

A trip to Nepal wouldn’t be complete without seeing the mountains of the Himalayas.

Grab a scenic flight that departs from Kathmandu Domestic airport and enjoy seeing 8 out of 10 of the highest peaks in the world including Mount Everest itself.

Everest Express, Nepal 2018

A fun way to see the mountains on a quick city visit to Kathmandu, and flying time is an hour in total and wont take up much of your day.

Enjoy seeing the highlight of Nepal from the sky on this Everest express flight with Yeti airlines.
