5 things to do in Berlin for free

Berlin is packed full of exciting things to do, most of them for free which makes it a perfect destination for backpacker’s.

I’ve put together a list of 5 things worth checking out in Berlin for Free, perfect for those on a budget and looking for stuff to do:

Free Berlin City Tour

The Berlin city tour by New Berlin Tours is totally worth checking out. It’s packed full of culture and history worth exploring. In fact, you might end up getting lost trying to take it all in. The Berlin City tour will help your bearings, cover most of the ground work and then you can head back to areas you found most interesting later on in the day.

The tour is free, but works on a tip basis. This means if the tour is not your cup of tea or the guide is not that interesting you can simply walk away, what do you have to lose? Way better than getting stuck in a tour your not interested in because you paid for it.

Tempelhofer Park

A short train ride (Berlin-Tempelhof station) from the city you will find Templehof Airport, these days it serves as a free public place for all to enjoy. Bring along a kite to fly or simply head on over to the Grill spots and start a BBQ party with your friends. Often locals flock here when the weather is great. Next to the train station you can find an Aldi, here you can pick up disposable grills, beers and BBQ food. It’s a nice experience when the sun is out and makes for an alternative Berlin for free experience.

Climb to the top of the Reichstag

It’s free to enter the Reichstag and all you have to do is register online in advance to secure your ticket. It’s worth checking out this unique building which was designed by Norman Foster and has a unique design of the old building blended in with a glass roof that represent political transparency.

Check out the Berlin Graffiti scene

Berlin has a rich graffiti culture, all of it can be explored with a local graffiti artist with Alternative Berlin tours who will take you to some interesting places around the city. It’s a free tour, which departs Mon,Wed,Fri,Sat & Sunday @12pm from the TV Tower and adds a fun element to your trip if you’re into alternative art. It’s like walking around an open art gallery and if you’re new to graffiti you can learn a lot about different techniques and how the graffiti culture started in Berlin.

Bonus Berlin Budget Tips

Couchsurfing is popular in Berlin and what better way to explore the underground music scene and bars than with a local. Berlin is a popular hitch hiking route too, so send some Couchsurfing requests, put your thumb out, check out my list of 5 things to do in Berlin for free and you can end up with an affordable weekend getaway!

Street food is also king in Berlin as its home to the famous Kebab. This tasty treat is affordable, great after a night out and you find it hard to get a better kebab any where else in Europe for the Berlin price tag.

Another bonus tip: Public transport in a large group rather than individual tickets is cheaper.
