Weekend getaway Escape in Alexandria, Minnesota
Minnesota is known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, but few destinations capture the spirit of lake life quite like Alexandria.
Nestled among rolling countryside, sparkling waterways and vibrant small-town communities, this central Minnesota destination offers a perfect mix of outdoor adventure, local history, great food and relaxed Midwestern hospitality.
Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or passing through on a longer road trip, Alexandria rewards visitors with scenic drives, unique museums, welcoming restaurants and plenty of opportunities to enjoy life at a slower pace.
Here’s how to spend a memorable few days exploring one of Minnesota’s most charming lake towns.
Check-In: Holiday Inn Express & Suites, Alexandria
A comfortable stay can set the tone for any trip, and Alexandria’s newly opened Holiday Inn Express & Suites offers a modern, convenient base for exploring the region.
Everything still feels fresh and contemporary, from the inviting lobby to the well-appointed rooms with plenty of space and amenities (including a washing machine and swimming pool!).
Its central location makes it easy to reach the area’s lakes, museums, restaurants, and shopping districts, making it an excellent choice for visitors who want to explore without spending too much time on the road.
The breakfast and complimentary coffee station is also well worth checking out.
After settling in, it was time to head out and discover what Alexandria has to offer.
Enjoy Dinner at Pike & Pint
The first evening began with dinner at Pike & Pint, one of Alexandria’s popular dining spots. The restaurant combines a relaxed atmosphere with a menu that celebrates local favourites and classic comfort foods.
Given the location, ordering the walleye fish fry felt almost mandatory.
Walleye is Minnesota’s state fish and a staple on menus throughout the region.
The crispy, golden coating gave way to flaky, tender fish, perfectly paired with traditional sides. It was a fitting introduction to the local food scene and an excellent start to the weekend.
Meet Alexandria’s Most Famous Resident: Big Ole
No visit to Alexandria is complete without stopping to see Big Ole.
Standing proudly in downtown Alexandria, this giant Viking statue has become one of the town’s most recognisable landmarks.
Created for the 1965 New York World’s Fair, Big Ole now serves as a playful tribute to the area’s Scandinavian heritage.
The oversized Viking, complete with shield and sword, is impossible to miss and has become a must-stop photo opportunity for visitors.
Whether you’re interested in local history or enjoy quirky roadside attractions, Big Ole delivers both character and charm.
And expect a hair change in the future, as residents have voted to change Big Ole’s hair colour to blonde!
Weekend Morning at the Alexandria Farmers Market
For weekend visitors, the Alexandria Farmers Market offers an authentic glimpse into the region’s agricultural roots, open Saturday 09:00 to 12:00 (Tuesday and Thursday too).
Stalls brim with seasonal produce, homemade baked goods, flowers, preserves and artisan products.
Local farmers and makers create a friendly atmosphere, offering a whole host of locally produced products. The sourdough bread and cheese seemed to be a local favourite.
It’s the perfect place to pick up snacks for the day, support local businesses, and feel the community spirit that defines Alexandria.
Exploring Downtown Alexandria
One of Alexandria’s highlights is its walkable downtown, where independent businesses still thrive.
A stroll revealed a collection of inviting shops and locally owned stores.
Ace Hardware may seem like an unusual tourism stop, but small-town hardware stores often offer a fascinating window into local life. I picked up a bucket for Halloween treats!
Nearby, Cherry Street Books offers a cosy haven for readers, with shelves packed with discoveries waiting to be made. Be sure to check out the event calendar.
The Scandinavian gift store offers another reminder of the area’s cultural heritage. Visitors can browse everything from Nordic-inspired décor and souvenirs to traditional gifts that reflect the strong Scandinavian influence woven throughout the region’s history. The Swedish dishcloths seemed to be a local hit.
Rather than rushing between attractions, downtown Alexandria encourages visitors to slow down and enjoy simple pleasures, whether that’s browsing a bookshop, chatting with locals or discovering a unique gift; loads are on offer for visitors.
For an affordable local sweet treat, check out Roers Family Bakery for a cookie, pastry, or cup of coffee. Popular with locals for years, don’t skip it.
Lunch at The Garden Bar
After a morning of exploring, lunch at The Garden Bar was one of the trip’s culinary highlights.
The turkey sandwich was satisfying without being overly heavy, making it an ideal midday choice. The seafood bisque, however, stole the show. Rich, creamy and packed with flavour, it provided a wonderful contrast to the crisp autumn air outside.
The combination made for a memorable meal and a welcome pause before the day’s adventures continued.
Carlos Creek Winery and 22 Northmen Brewing Tour
One of Alexandria’s standout destinations is Carlos Creek Winery, which shares a property with 22 Northmen Brewing Company.
The setting combines beautiful grounds with a relaxed atmosphere, making it easy to spend several hours enjoying tastings and exploring the property.
Wine enthusiasts will appreciate the variety of locally produced wines, while beer lovers can sample a range of craft brews from 22 Northmen.
If you can try a glass of wine from the Carlos Creek Winery 300 casks range, they offer an excellent drop.
Among the highlights was the Norse Lager, a crisp and refreshing beer that pairs perfectly with an afternoon outdoors.
Visitors should also make time for a meal from the stone-fired pizza oven. The wood-fired pizzas emerge with perfectly blistered crusts and make an ideal companion to both the wines and beers on offer.
The combination of quality drinks, excellent food and scenic surroundings makes this one of the most enjoyable experiences in the Alexandria area.
Dinner at D. Michael B’s
After a day of tasting and touring, dinner called for something hearty.
D. Michael B’s delivered exactly that with a plate of fall-off-the-bone ribs covered in the restaurant’s house sauce.
Tender, smoky and packed with flavour, the ribs showcased the kind of comfort food that has made the restaurant a local favourite.
It’s the sort of meal that leaves you fully satisfied and ready for a relaxing evening. Enjoy the interesting wall displays going on in here too.
Grab a weekend brunch here at LongTrees
A great weekend getaway deserves a great brunch, and LongTrees provided one of the best meals of the trip.
The brisket steak was cooked beautifully, combining rich flavour with impressive tenderness.
Paired with expertly crafted breakfast cocktails, it delivered an elevated brunch experience without sacrificing the warm, welcoming atmosphere that characterises Alexandria’s dining scene.
LongTrees strikes an appealing balance between casual comfort and culinary creativity, making it well worth a visit. The waffles were great too!
Exploring Alexandria’s Lakes by Pontoon
Alexandria’s identity is inseparable from its lakes.
One of the best ways to experience the region is aboard a pontoon boat, and a leisurely ride from Lake Darling Resort provided a fresh perspective on the area.
Gliding across calm water surrounded by autumn colours, lakeside homes and forested shorelines is about as quintessentially Minnesota as it gets.
The slower pace allows visitors to fully appreciate the scenery and understand why generations of families have chosen to holiday here.
For photographers, reflections on the water and changing leaves offer endless opportunities. Keep an eye out for local birdlife on the water, too.
Autumn Drive Through Lake Carlos State Park
The surrounding landscape becomes particularly beautiful during autumn, and Lake Carlos State Park is one of the best places to experience it.
Driving through the park during peak colour season reveals hillsides blanketed in shades of gold, orange and red.
The winding roads and lakeside viewpoints create countless opportunities to pause and take in the scenery.
Even a simple drive through the park becomes an attraction in its own right when nature puts on such a spectacular display.
Dinner at The Depot Smokehouse & Tavern
Back in town, dinner at The Depot offered another memorable meal.
The Cajun shrimp tacos delivered bold flavour with just the right amount of spice.
Combining fresh ingredients with creative preparation, the dish stood out among an already impressive collection of dining experiences throughout the trip.
The restaurant’s relaxed atmosphere makes it an excellent place to unwind after a day of exploring.
Legacy of the Lakes Museum
Discovering Alexandria’s History: Beyond the lakes and restaurants, Alexandria boasts several fascinating cultural attractions.
Did you know that the Birthplace of Water Skiing is in Minnesota?
The Legacy of the Lakes Museum celebrates Minnesota’s deep connection to boating and lake culture.
Interactive exhibits and beautifully restored vessels help tell the story of how lakes have shaped recreation, tourism and daily life throughout the region.
It’s an engaging experience that adds valuable context to everything visitors see on the water.
Discover Norse history at the Runestone Museum
The Runestone Museum delves into one of Minnesota’s most intriguing historical mysteries.
Home to the famous Kensington Runestone, the museum explores theories surrounding Viking exploration and Scandinavian influence in the area.
Whether visitors are convinced by the various interpretations or remain sceptical, the museum offers an entertaining and thought-provoking experience.
Together, these museums provide a deeper understanding of Alexandria’s unique identity and heritage.
Lobster Rolls at The Lure
The trip’s final dinner took place at The Lure.
Known for its seafood-focused offerings, the restaurant served an excellent lobster roll with generous portions of lobster and a fresh, buttery finish.
The quality of the ingredients and attention to detail made it a fitting culinary finale to a weekend filled with memorable meals.
A Taste of Americana at Garden Centre Lanes
To round out the visit, an evening at Garden Centre Lanes offered something refreshingly simple: bowling.
There is something wonderfully nostalgic about a classic bowling alley. Families gather, friends compete, and everyone enjoys a few laughs between frames. It’s an increasingly rare experience that offers an authentic slice of Americana.
For visitors who want to experience local life rather than check attractions off a list, an evening at the lanes is surprisingly rewarding.
Why Alexandria Should Be on Your Minnesota Travel List
Alexandria combines everything that makes a Midwest getaway appealing. Beautiful lakes, colourful seasonal scenery, excellent local restaurants, intriguing history and welcoming people all come together to create a destination that feels both relaxing and engaging.
From pontoon rides on Lake Darling and autumn drives through Lake Carlos State Park to seafood bisque at The Garden Bar, wine tasting at Carlos Creek Winery and photos with Big Ole, every experience contributes to the town’s unique character.
It is the kind of place where a weekend feels comfortably full without ever feeling rushed. Alexandria may not be Minnesota’s largest destination, but that’s precisely its appeal.
The town invites visitors to slow down, savour local flavours, explore at their own pace and enjoy the simple pleasures that make travel memorable.
For anyone seeking an authentic Minnesota experience, Alexandria is well worth the journey.
