My Top 5 Bucket List Adventure Destinations for 2018
This has got to be my favourite kind of article to get together at the start of 2018. I’ve been lucky to visit so many incredible destinations around the world. But in a world as big and beautiful as ours, you can always pick out new and exciting destinations for your yearly bucket list.
It was hard to pin it on to just 5 destinations, but these are the places that keep coming back to me when I think about the corners of the world I still have left to explore. Some of them are already booked in for 2018 for travel conferences and tour experiences, and some of them are still just dreams. I have no doubt that I will get to cross all of these exotic locations off my bucket list though, it’s just a matter of time.
Here are my top 5 bucket list adventure destinations for this year, I hope they inspire you to book an exotic trip (or two) for yourself this year. Why not make the most of it by creating a bucket list of your own? It really is such a fun way to set some clear goals for your travels, and let your imagination go a bit.
1. An adventure awaits in Jordan
Jordan has always fascinated me as a Middle Eastern destination with a lot of historic and natural beauty to offer. Petra in the southwestern desert has always captured my imagination, and I would love to see the tombs and temples carved into the pink sandstone cliffs that they call ‘Rose City’. Taking a quad bike out for some desert exploration is high on my list too, I’ve always wanted to trek across the Dana Nature Reserve.
Luckily I will be attending the conference Adventure Next arranged by the Adventure Travel Trade Association in Jordan this May. This will be a great opportunity to attend this big event in travel for the first time, and also finally visit Jordan and take on some of my adventure ideas. I can’t wait to visit and tick this place off my list.
2. Sri Lanka is the place to be at the moment
The island of Sri Lanka isn’t called the pearl of the Indian Ocean for nothing. All I ever see of this island in pictures are stunning beaches, great looking food and smiling locals. I’m looking forward to experiencing this famously chilled out paradise for travellers. It’s all about driving a tuk tuk through the tea fields, and also taking the long scenic train from Kandy to Ella where you can climb Adam’s Peak and enjoy some incredible views. Along the south coast I hear about so many beaches worth enjoying like Welligama, Unawatuna, Arugam Bay and Mirissa where you can surf and meet a fun backpacker community.
Later this year I’ll be going on a tuk tuk adventure with Large Minority. I really can’t wait for another one of their adventure holidays. Tuk tuk seems to be the way to get around on Sri Lanka so it will be perfect to explore this gorgeous island from the comfortable cabin of Asia’s favourite vehicle.
Antarctica is on almost everyone’s adventure list
Well, you can always dream! Antarctica is obviously a must-visit destination for any adventurer, and has always been a huge a dream of mine. Clearly a trip down south (way down south) takes a lot of dedication and preparation, and it is definitely something I plan on doing at one point in my life. Antarctica is a mostly uninhabited frozen land mass, and you can see many stunning iceberg passageways. Did you know they even have fresh water in Antarctica? You can also see a lot of wildlife including penguins. But will it happen in 2018? Fingers crossed.
Still time to explore Cuba
Is it still too late to visit Cuba? I don’t think so. I’d be all over grabbing some classic rum and Cuban cigars and exploring the culture and history of Havana, just like Ernest Hemingway did.
Apparently you can hire classic cars to ride around in and experience the vibe of Cuba in a truly glamorous fashion. Havana is famous for the people breaking into song and dance at every opportunity, so I’m really looking forward to experiencing this lively atmosphere for myself.
Wild card adventure destination: Malta
I haven’t paid a visit to Malta since I was 9 years old, but I have great memories of this archipelago nation. It’s located in the central Mediterranean between Sicily and the North African coast. I would love to return in 2018 and explore the wonderful historical cities and beaches on a weekend escape in the close future.
Malta is famous for its megalithic temples, numerous fortresses around the island, and some fascinating Maltese delicacies that are a huge combination of different cultures.
