Try Before You Fly: My Thoughts on Virtual Travel

  • by Dave Brett

We are lucky to live in a time where people are starting to value experiences over material possessions. People are choosing to spend their hard earned cash on holiday memories that last a lifetime, rather than splashing out on a mortgage.

The Rise of Virtual Travel

The future of travel is looking very bright indeed, and now with the increasing use of virtual reality technology to help travellers get a crystal clear idea of the trip they’re about to book, it’s looking even brighter!

Virtual travel experiences are becoming one of the best ways to get a truly get a feel for the land you’re about to travel to.

What an exciting time to be alive hey!

You can see what kind of street your hotel is on, what the rooms actually look like on the inside, and perhaps how far away where you’re staying is from the beach.

This technology is only getting better by the day.

Life Through a Lens

Augmented reality hit the news last year with the Pokémon Go craze, and VR is about to become the ultimate technology buzzword you’ll be seeing everywhere you go.

Apps such as Google Street View have been used ingeniously by the public to get a really good picture of where they’re about to go on holiday, and it’s only going to get bigger.

More and more companies are taking advantage of virtual reality technology features to run campaigns and show their customers exactly what they can expect.

Augmented reality experiences that soon-to-be travellers are becoming increasingly popular prior to embarking on a trip.

From VR headsets to simply using Google StreetView and 360, virtual and augmented reality functions really are the way forward when it comes to the travel industry making the most of current technologies to give their consumers a better idea of the experience they’re about to book.

New Age of Marketing

All sorts of brands have started to implement this exciting new marketing tool.

Dealchecker have just launched an incredible virtual reality tour of the stunning and popular holiday hotspot that is the Greek Islands, offering readers the chance to virtually explore some of the islands’ best attractions and most picturesque spots.

You can use VR technology to get a 360 view of Santorini, Mykonos, Corfu, Rhodes, Naxos and Paros. If you weren’t enticed to take a long, lazy holiday on a beautiful Greek island, you will be now!

We’ve only just begun to see the benefits and impact of virtual travel on our lives as travellers.

Brands such as Thompson Cook saw a 180% increase in flight sales after using virtual technology integration to immerse customers in their destination.

Airlines, hotels, tourist boards, tour operators, car rental companies will all be flocking to utilise augmented reality technologies in their advertising campaigns.

Delta and Lufthansa Airlines are also in on the act, offering virtual reality tours of their aircraft and simulated flights that take you from your point of departure to one of their travel destination. All on screen of course!

The benefits to the average consumer will be huge.

No longer will booking a holiday to a destination you’ve never been to before always feel like a gamble, with high stakes!

Now you can scour every inch of your hotel room as if you were actually there, measure how long the walk to the beach from your veranda, and find out just how central your hotel really is!

Head over to one of the travel companies using virtual reality technology right now to get a feel for how this futuristic innovation could be shaping your holiday booking experiences. We’d recommend that Greek Island tour on dealchecker,

it’s almost got us ready to go on holiday ourselves!
