Donkey Republic Rent a Bicycle in London using an App

Donkey Republic is an app and web service focused towards helping you to rent a bicycle as easy as possible in the city of London and many other European cities, using a smartphone.

They’re expanding operations rather quickly, so expect a Donkey Republic bike popping up in your neighbourhood soon. It won’t be long!

With a day spare on my recent trip to London, I thought it would be a fun idea to go and pick a bike up for a spin around town.

This is a blog post all about how to rent a bike in London and how I got along with the Donkey Republic app and service.

Easy location in central London

(Can be a pain to bring your own bike into the city, rent one instead)

Living outside of Central London it can be a pain to bring a bike on the national rail network as well as public buses and tube stations, unless you have one of those fancy foldable bikes or fancy a long commute into central.

(The London Bicycle repair shop is easily located behind Southwark tube station)

Donkey Republic currently has bikes you can pick up at the perfectly located Southwark, at The London Bicycle repair shop.

Grab the tube in and go and pick one up, you can do so with by using your smartphone to make the booking.

London has easy bike routes to follow

(Easy to cycle around the London cycling network)

London wants to get you on a bike and you can easily find maps and bicycle paths to follow which will take you to the many major sites of London.

The great thing is you won’t have to battle head on with road traffic, the paths are very safe and well sign posted making it easy for you to explore the city by Bicycle.

I’ve found the London public bicycles very confusing to book myself and not very touristy friendly.

24/7 bicycle renting service

Donkey Republic has an easy to use app where you can easily make your 24 hour booking using your smartphone.

For myself on the day I could get a bike for 24 hours for the low price of £12. That’s an incredible value at 50p an hour, what can you get for 50p these days?

When you need a bike, you can rent one without the need of a bicycle shop being open.

All operations work through the use of the smartphone app and around the clock, whenever you need one, make the booking, pick one up and its as easy as that.

Bluetooth bicycle lock

(You can unlock your rental bike using your smartphone Bluetooth and app)

All Donkey Republic bicycles have Bluetooth locks which you can access by using the smartphone app.

Whenever you want to stop off for a sandwich and a coffee, find a place to park up and lock up. When you need to grab your bike again, you can easily unlock the bike with the app.

(When a coffee and a bacon wrap is calling, lock up and go, it’s that easy)

You have complete freedom to go where ever you wish around London.

Just remember that in London you ride your bike on the left hand side of the road!

Explore London, go where you want to go

(London is your oyster, enjoy on a bike rental)

When you take into account the cost of a one day London travel card and the confusing navigation around the London tube system, take to the road with a bicycle rental and get lost.

(Go where you want, London is yours, have fun!)

When you’ve finished with your bicycle rental, simply return the bike to the spot where you picked it up, lock up the bike and sync the lock with the app to finish your booking reservation within your 24 hour period.
