Few places in North America can transport you to another continent quite like Quebec City.

With its cobbled streets, centuries-old architecture, fortified walls and unmistakable French character, this UNESCO World Heritage destination feels more like a corner of France than a city in Canada.

Whether you’re wandering through historic squares, sampling maple syrup treats, discovering Indigenous culture, or tucking into authentic Québécois cuisine, Quebec City delivers an unforgettable blend of history, culture and charm.

My recent trip to Quebec City proved exactly why it remains one of Canada’s most captivating destinations.

Flying to Quebec City from London with Air Transat

Getting to Quebec City from the UK was surprisingly straightforward and excellent value.

I flew with Air Transat from London Gatwick to Montreal, then connected on to Quebec City.

For travellers looking for an affordable way to reach Eastern Canada, Air Transat offers a fantastic balance between comfort and price.

The transatlantic flight included a meal service along with wine, which was a welcome touch and made the journey feel a little more special.

The cabin crew were friendly, the flight was comfortable, and the overall experience exceeded expectations, especially given the competitive fares.

After arriving in Montreal, the onward connection to Quebec City was smooth and efficient. Soon after, I was heading into one of North America’s most historic cities.

I saved on baggage by bringing only hand luggage, and the in-flight entertainment system was a welcome touch on a budget airline. The return flights set me back £420, and I booked a week before, which was great value.

A Budget-Friendly Stay at QBEDS Hostel in the heart of Quebec

Accommodation in historic cities can often stretch the budget, but I found an excellent option at Auberge de Jeunesse QBEDS Hostel.

Located within easy walking distance of Old Quebec and its famous fortifications, the hostel offered clean, comfortable rooms and outstanding value for money.

The facilities were well maintained, the atmosphere friendly, and its location made exploring the city incredibly easy.

For solo travellers, backpackers or anyone looking to maximise their travel budget without sacrificing comfort, QBEDS is an ideal base for discovering Quebec City. Did I mention a hearty breakfast was also included in my stay? For a week, I paid £160, which is excellent value for the location.

Stepping Back in Time and exploring Old Quebec

The real magic of Quebec City begins the moment you enter Old Quebec.

Historic District of Old Québec is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site; Old Quebec is the birthplace of French North America and boasts more than 400 years of history.

It remains the only fortified city north of Mexico where the original city walls still stand.

Walking along these historic fortifications offers some of the best views of the city while providing a fascinating glimpse into its military past.

The stone walls, gates and bastions create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Canada. Every day I grabbed a coffee and walked around the old town; it’s such a lovely place to explore.

As you stroll through the narrow streets, lined with colourful buildings, flower-filled balconies and charming cafés, it’s easy to forget you’re in North America.

Around every corner, another picturesque scene begs to be photographed.

Exploring Petit-Champlain and Place Royale

No visit to Quebec City would be complete without spending time in Petit-Champlain.

Often described as one of North America’s most beautiful streets, Petit-Champlain is packed with independent boutiques, artisan shops, restaurants and beautifully preserved buildings.

The district radiates a distinctly European atmosphere that draws visitors year-round.

Just a short walk away lies Place Royale, one of the most historically significant locations in Canada.

This charming square marks the site where Samuel de Champlain established the first permanent French settlement in 1608.

The surrounding stone buildings create a wonderfully authentic setting, making it one of the city’s most photographed areas.

Nearby, visitors can explore the beautiful Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church, one of North America’s oldest stone churches.

Standing in this historic square reminds you of Quebec City’s role in shaping Canada’s history.

Riding the Funicular and Conquering Breakneck Steps

One of the most enjoyable ways to experience Quebec City’s unique geography is aboard the Old Québec Funicular.

Connecting Upper Town and Lower Town, the short ride offers spectacular views over the historic district and the St Lawrence River.

For those who prefer a little exercise, the nearby Escalier Casse-Cou, or Breakneck Steps, offers a more adventurous route.

Dating back to the 17th century, these steep wooden stairs connect the two levels of the old city and have become one of Quebec City’s most iconic landmarks.

At the bottom, visit the Royal Battery, a historic defensive structure overlooking the river.

Time For A Sweet Taste of Quebec

Quebec is synonymous with maple syrup, and no visitor should leave without trying one of the province’s most beloved treats.

At Le Petite Cabane à Sucre de Québec, I experienced traditional maple taffy for the first time.

Hot maple syrup is poured onto fresh snow, where it instantly thickens, then is rolled onto a wooden stick.

Simple yet delicious, it’s a uniquely Québécois experience that appeals to both children and adults alike.

Watching the taffy form before enjoying the rich sweetness is part of the fun.

Strolling the Dufferin Boardwalk

One of Quebec City’s most pleasant walks is along the wooden boardwalk known as Terrasse Dufferin.

Stretching alongside the dramatically perched Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, this elevated promenade delivers stunning views of the St Lawrence River and the surrounding landscape.

The Château Frontenac itself is impossible to miss. With its castle-like appearance, green copper roofs and commanding position above the city, it is widely regarded as one of the most photographed hotels in the world.

During the winter months, visitors can also watch brave locals and tourists hurtle down the historic toboggan run located right beside the hotel (Been around since 1884!).

Even outside winter, the location remains one of the city’s most vibrant gathering places.

Head out of town and explore Montmorency Falls

Just fifteen minutes outside Old Quebec lies one of the region’s most impressive natural attractions. Take bus 800 from the city; tickets are under $4 Canadian. You can use the app (RTC NOMADE) to book your ticket; the same app is for the airport bus too.

Parc de la Chute-Montmorency is home to the spectacular Montmorency Falls, which plunge 83 metres (272 feet) into the Montmorency River below. Remarkably, the waterfall stands higher than Niagara Falls.

The sheer power of the cascading water creates an unforgettable sight. Visitors can admire the falls from numerous viewpoints, suspension bridges and walking trails throughout the park. Brave visitors can even zipline across.

Whether viewed from above, below, or directly alongside the rushing water, Montmorency Falls provides a dramatic contrast to the historic streets of Quebec City and reminds you of the province’s remarkable natural beauty.

Savouring Authentic Québécois Cuisine at La Buche

Food is a huge part of any visit to Quebec, and La Buche proved to be one of my favourite culinary discoveries.

This lively restaurant embraces traditional Québécois culture with rustic décor, friendly service and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. The moment you walk through the doors, it feels as though you’ve stepped into a traditional sugar shack.

Of course, I couldn’t visit without trying poutine.

Widely regarded as Quebec’s signature dish, poutine combines crispy fries, cheese curds and rich gravy into a surprisingly satisfying comfort food.

While you can find versions across Canada, enjoying it in Quebec feels like experiencing the dish where it truly belongs.

Beyond the food itself, La Buche captures the warmth and personality of Quebec culture, making it a must-visit restaurant for first-time visitors.

Learning About Indigenous Heritage in Wendake

While Quebec City’s French heritage often takes centre stage, the region’s Indigenous history is equally important.

A visit to the Wendat Museum provided valuable insight into the culture, traditions and history of the Huron-Wendat Nation, whose presence in the region extends back centuries.

The museum offers engaging exhibits that highlight Indigenous perspectives and showcase the Wendat community’s resilience and ongoing contributions.

For travellers seeking a deeper understanding of the area’s cultural heritage, Wendake provides an important and enriching experience beyond the city’s colonial history.

An Exceptional Meal at La Traite

Located within the Hôtel-Musée Premières Nations, La Traite offers one of the area’s most memorable dining experiences.

The restaurant incorporates Indigenous ingredients and culinary traditions into a contemporary menu that celebrates local heritage.

My standout dish was undoubtedly the bison ribs.

Tender, flavourful and cooked to perfection, they were among the finest meals I enjoyed during my entire stay in Quebec.

Combined with the restaurant’s elegant atmosphere and beautiful setting, dining at La Traite became a highlight of the trip.

A Magical Evening at Onhwa’ Lumina

As darkness fell, I headed to Onhwa’ Lumina, an immersive multimedia night walk located in Wendake.

This enchanting outdoor experience blends storytelling, light projections, sound and nature to create a captivating journey through the myths and traditions of the Wendat people.

Walking through the illuminated forest after sunset feels almost dreamlike as technology and Indigenous storytelling come together in a truly unique way.

The experience offers something distinctly different from Quebec City’s historic attractions and makes for an unforgettable evening activity.

Another Taste of Quebec at Poutine Ville

No trip devoted to exploring Quebec’s food culture would be complete without another serving of poutine.

At Poutine Ville, diners can customise their own creations from a variety of toppings and ingredients. Traditionalists can stick with the classic formula, while more adventurous visitors can experiment with elaborate combinations.

It’s a fun, casual dining experience and another excellent opportunity to indulge in one of Quebec’s most iconic dishes.

Why Quebec City Should Be on Every Traveller’s List

Quebec City achieves something remarkably rare. It offers the history, architecture and atmosphere of Europe while remaining unmistakably Canadian.

From wandering the fortified streets of Old Quebec and exploring Petit-Champlain to tasting maple taffy, marvelling at Montmorency Falls and discovering Indigenous culture in Wendake, every day brings new experiences and memorable moments.
