Normally I’m a custom to sleeping in a 12 bunk dorm room, or crashing on a mate’s floor. Value is my number one priority when it comes to accommodation as the more I save the more I can travel. I’m really not bothered by the place I sleep but more the people I meet and the places I get to see.
When I was offered to stay in a 5 star luxury hotel, I was quick to changed my ways. In fact I’ve never had the pleasure to stay in such a fancy place and as a Tourism graduate, I’ve always wondered the on goings in such resorts.
Well along come my Opportunity! One of the prizes of the “I’m a backpacker, get me in there” prizes was to stay a night at the Palazzo Versace. Located around the Marina of Surfers Paradise situated along the Gold Coast it has a Stunning location. I couldn’t let this once In a lifetime opportunity pass just like that, So I jumped at the chance.
Checking into Plazzo Versace.
Arriving in a Limo, I feel like the front desk was expecting a little more Glam to emerge than 6 scruffy backpackers. Arriving straight after a 24 hour flight We looked like a train wreck! As we lugged are backpacks onto the gold colored bag cart, We really couldn’t give two hoots and wanted to check in as soon as possible. When you stay at such a resort you really don’t want to just sleep in the room, you wanted to take in the whole experience bit by bit. The hotel becomes the main attraction and the evening’s entertainment. It really is that much of a rare opportunity for me.
The staff were all very friendly and inviting and as it was 10am the room wasn’t ready, but they offered us the opportunity of having breakfast, Boy was this some breakfast.
The Breakfast buffet was one to die for, I’m a massive fan of breakfast and everything I could image was on offer to eat at your heart’s content. French toast, Egg Benedict on request, fresh salmon and most importantly Barista prepared high quality coffee. Along with a complimentary newspaper I was in heaven, what a great way to start the day.
I’ve never seen such a lavishing pool in my life, It was huge but it was the winter and a little on the choppy side. But I had to go for a dip, would have been a crime to have not given it ago. We were only staying for the 1 Nights so had to do a week stay all at once.
Why am I mentioning the towels? Well we joked on the way to the hotel, that we promised to leave the towels when we departed. We joked because its a common backpacker trait when staying at a resort that towels go missing time to time. A polite notice on the towel stated that we are welcome to take the towels at a cost of $185, Wasn’t funny any more. In all fairness they were great towels but I was quick to return them to the room after a dip in the pool. I’ve stayed in hostels for a month for less than the hotel towel! We were only joking but wow what a slap on the credit card if you didn’t read the sign.
Around 7pm after I was ready to go out for a night with the other competition winners, I had a knock at the door. To my Surprise it was room cleaning asking if I would like my Mattress turned over? Never in my life have I ever flipped over my mattress, maybe a pillow or two but never been offered the privilege. Apparently this is the norm in 5 star resorts, but I politely declined and gained some chocolate in the process! How the other half lives hey!
Hot tub in toom
I have to admit I’m a shower person but having a hot tub within your room I couldn’t resist After a long flight, it was just what I needed.

Toilet by the phone
This was the funniest encounter of the stay, Low and behold a phone by my toilet. I was puzzled to why and thought it would be funny to call room service for toilet paper. Is that what it’s for?
Well, best to just show you, Incredible!
Truly was a night stay to remember and it was a real privilege to stay in such a lovely fancy place. A truly incredible experience that I will remember For Ever. Now back to staying at hostels and sleeping on couches, one nights stay has been just perfect.
Thank you Palazzo Versace Hotel, Gold Coast Tourism and Gapyear.com for putting on this extra special experience during our stay in the gold coast. I highly recommend anyone who wants to treat themselves and stay in this luxury hotel to go for it!
